Neuralgia and Neuritis
Neuralgia
is severe sharp pain along the course of a nerve. Neuralgia
may be caused by neuritis, toxins, tight muscles, bad
posture or body mechanics, pressure on the nerve trunks,
or faulty nerve nutrition. Symptoms include pain, swelling,
redness and loss of sensation in the affected nerve
area; in severe cases, convulsions, muscular atrophy,
paralysis, or lack of reflexes may occur. Usually no
cause can be determined; it often goes away without
treatment, especially if the neuralgia was caused by
trauma, stress or overwork.
Neuritis:
Neuritis is inflammation of a nerve, usually associated
with a degenerative process. Neuritis may result from
compression, contusion, trauma, infections, toxins,
metabolic factors, peripheral vascular disease, or autoimmune
diseases. It may occur anywhere in the body. Optic neuritis
is the inflammation of the optic nerve in the eye, causing
blurred vision, even temporary blindness.
Treatment
includes:
- Appropriate
Rest
- Correction
of Body Mechanics
- Therapeutic
Exercise
- Removal
of Known Causative Factors
- Dietary
Therapy for Metabolic Disorders.
Daily
attention should be given to skin and muscles; massage
and compresses may be effective, but temperature extremes
should be avoided.
