Rotator Cuff Injuries/ Shoulder-Arm Problems
While some people may experience an acute injury or strain to their shoulder muscles, common underlying culprits include muscle overuse and poor scapular-shoulder mechanics. These conditions occur when someone repetitively performs a specific activity for months or years on end, thereby overusing their shoulder-elbow-arm muscles in an improper manner.
Effective treatment begins with a thorough medical evaluation to rule out specific damage to the shoulder muscles or joint; this may be followed by rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy treatment to the neck/back, shoulder and arm. Physical Therapy includes a thorough evaluation of posture and shoulder-arm mechanics; treatments may utilize ice, massage, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, appropriate exercises and functional training.
