Education
“Insomnia” refers to any problem with sleeping, which may be of transient or of chronic nature. Some people have difficulty going to sleep, others have difficulty staying asleep; some don’t get deep, restful sleep so they feel fatigued the next day, possibly nodding off at inopportune times. Problems like snoring or breathing cessation during the night can be indicators of specific sleep-related problems.
The SLBMI pain management team can help people with insomnia make lifestyle adjustments to improve sleep. Sleep is critically important to health, because it allows the body time to heal, replenishes the immune system and invigorates the body and mind. Pain and insomnia negatively affect each other. As a person gets less sleep (or experiences poor quality sleep), pain worsens; as pain worsens, sleep disturbances become more likely.
During the treatment phase, helpful recommendations are explored with the client. Some suggestions to improve sleep might include: developing a consistent sleep schedule seven days a week; using imagery/relaxation strategies prior to bedtime; limiting intake of caffeine, salt or nicotine; and not reading or watching TV in bed. These easily incorporated changes often produce improvement sleep and reduce pain levels.
