Elbow Pain/ Epicondylitis: “Tennis Elbow” and “Golfer's Elbow”
Lateral Epicondylitis, commonly called “Tennis Elbow”, is a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. Medial Epicondylitis or “Golfer's Elbow” similarly affects the inside of the elbow.
While some people may have an acute injury or strain, common underlying culprits include muscle overuse and poor scapular-shoulder mechanics. This problem may appear when someone repetitively performs a specific activity, thereby overusing their shoulder-elbow-arm muscles.
Effective treatment may begin with rest and anti-inflammatory drugs, followed by physical therapy treatment to the neck, shoulder and arm. Therapy includes evaluation of posture and shoulder-arm mechanics, with treatments utilizing ice, massage, electrical stimulation, ultrasound and proper exercise. People who use appropriate self-care strategies frequently each day are often able to reduce the associated symptoms and resume many activities.
